    Hi all,

How can I tell if my Baltic Medal is genuine? It was gifted to me when a child by someone very close to me but she didn't even know what it was. antiquers.jpg antiquers1.jpg

A test for Stirling Silver would confirm it is genuine, don't use acid though.
XRF analyzer machine or Rare Earth Magnet are best.

Medal is not attracted by strong magnet.

Something to do with Crimean War service maybe?

Yes if you read the link it explains the engraving.
It will attract to a rare earth magnet if silver but not an ordinary magnet.
Check Youtube videos on how to test a silver coin with a Rare Earth magnet, its the same for a sterling silver medal.
You will have to buy a REM, they are on ebay quite cheap.

They called in the big guns to do the engraving, William and Leonard Charles Wyon.

The engraving I'm talking about is the recipients name rank number and regiment around the edge of the medal, most British medals awarded prior to WWII were engraved with the awardees details.

    similar to these.

I wasn't replying to your inquiry re: personalization, I was expanding on what I learned at your excellent link. They did not use the work of second string medallists for this one.
