Believe it or not I was given this! A real thing of beauty! It has been glued together with what looks like wood glue. Better still this unmarked pitcher has a paper label which informs me "ebrechures aux pied" which, in English would be "chips to the base" ... No kidding!? The label also says "Nevers 18eme siècle" that will be the 18th century.

So can you tell me anything about it? Like who might have made it, and I think the pattern is specific - but what specific?

    It is 9.5 inches/24mm high with a diameter (excluding handle) 5.5 inches/14mm

    ... And I love it!!

In looking at what 1700s artwork pattern could this be, it could be many. It is probably too simplistic to be a Dutch ceramic pitcher, but that is what comes to mind due to my own life in the United States and familiarity with Pennsylvania Dutch style, which is also more elaborate than yours.

It does look very antique to say the least! ;)

Italy would be my second guess, but since I haven't seen enough 18th century Italian pottery pitchers, I haven't seen one with an unglazed bottom.

That truly does look very old! Who gave it to you? And who put the sticker?

Faeince de Nevers, spongeware decorated - tin glazed terracotta basically. Could well be 18th C.

    It's a pichon/pichet for wine.

A French lady gave it to me. She said her father collected very old stuff. I,ll say! She also gave me two boxes full of Roman sigillata dug up from just outside Lyon in France. Her dad wrote the paper note on the base which says 'Nevers' on it. In fact Nevers is not too far away from where I live now

I love that someone thought enough of it to save it! It actually is much like my battered collection of pieces. :)

I love old faience, be it bashed about or not. And it's almost always bashed: I'm suspicious if it isn't.
