Bought this on eBay earlier this month, and it finally arrived.

Any idea how old this is? I originally thought WWI, but research suggests WWII-era vintage, during the 1940s. I tried looking up Dunhill patents, but couldn't find anything.

They are also called rope lighters. My dad had one that he used in WWII.

I didn't want to burn the old rope that came with it. I removed that and put it away for safekeeping.

The rope I put into it is just cotton rope which I happened to have a whole heap of, and which was the perfect size for the lighter. I cut off about two feet, and shoved it inside, and added a new flint.

It works great, for what it is. :)
