Good morning, new member here, so not sure how this works? I've inherited a very old refectory table from my father and I know nothing of its age or provenance. It's a substantial piece, very heavy, 1 plank, wooden pegs instead of nails, definately hand made and very old. Could anyone tell me a little about it? He had it for over 50 years that i know of and bought it for £400 all that time ago, so I assume its a quality piece.

@Racylarson You need to "embed" your table pictures into this thread by using the little "camera icon" in the Reply toolbar. Most members do not go to the Gallery - which, btw, is not a good place to try to have a conversation about your items.

Hard to tell from pic but seems to be a 2 board top. Oak. Think the round things in the pedistal are where knots were cut out. Definitely old. Would think mid 19th century at the least. English?

Agree on the two-plank top. Thinking English oak trestle table, 2nd quarter of the 19th century.

Thanks for comments. It's actually 1 plank rather than 2, pictures are hard to tell. Does that make a difference?

It looked that way to me, but I thought I must have been wrong.;)

Lovely bit of oak from a very ancient tree to get that width of top. I'd think earlier, but we've been making these for centuries. Country made piece. Daft thing is, it's not kep pace with inflation.

If it is a single board top, then I also think earlier. Still think it is 2 boards. If you look in the center, the knot and corresponding patch do not continue onto the the board on the right. A knot should have grain curving around it on both sides.
