I know nada about dolls and the internet is just confusing me more. So in advance, thank you for any help!!
I realize neither is likely to be very old, however I need to sell them so need help to ID them. The china doll has china head, forearms and boots/feet. On the back of her it only looks like 1957 hand written into the china. She is 21" tall. What are the brown dots/stains on her cloth body called? Like how someone tied a spool in between her legs to keep them from damage?

The second one is marked Bru Jne 10. I am certain it is a repro but I'll be darned if I have found any clear information. It has bisque head, bisque shoulders, forearms and legs. It is 19 1/2" tall.

Hi Rose. I would say both are repros.

The china head looks pretty good, and could be older, but the body is new.

The Bru is definitely new. Look at the way the eyebrows and lashes are painted for clues. Compare with other photos of said doll that you may find on the internet......places like Skinner's, Withington's, Theriault, etc. offered/sold at reliable auction houses.

Looking at the china head again.....never saw one with eyelashes or arched eyebrows.

Looking more and more like a repro.

Sometimes the doll artist will sign the back of the shoulder.

Hi Judy ... I say that BOTH are reproductions .. The painting, the bodies .. .. nothing is old. That being said they may appeal to someone to collect as long as they are marked properly. ... Joy. :)

Not surprising. The faces are badly painted.

looks like foxing to me, maybe there is a doll term for it? Acid stains / burns - and the acid itself can be manufactured inside of the fabric, of course you probably know this..

One can purchase every kind of antique fabric on Ebay .. lace, silk, linen fine cotton, calico etc etc, in original antique condition, for restoring, making clothing, and bodies for antique dolls. I have some here in that foxing condition that I have used for repairs .. much better than using new stuff. If i have to make clothing for an antique doll I use antique fabric, often no longer white or with foxing on it .. same goes for lace and ribbon .. all antique and mostly with the signs of aging on it ... Joy.

Also, I also sew with antique thread, both cotton and silk .. Shiloh sent me a box of antique thread a couple of years ago .. it was a great windfall for me as I hand sew and like everything to be antique ... Joy.

SOOooo .. if anyone has any scraps of really old fine fabric I'll always buy it, it must be fine and thin stuff .. cotton, silk, lace and wool .. unwashed and original condition, unlike me who is washed and no longer in original condition :joyful: ... Joy.

Thanks for responding, ChristmasJoy, is it still called "foxing" when referring to fabrics - the little brown spots from acid? :cat:

I had no idea you are a talented doll seamstress! Do you do repairs for other people's dolls and such?

Thank You Phaik Hooi .. vintage but rapidly heading towards antique .. THEN I'll be worth more, could put myself on Ebay .. FOR SALE, .. Lovely old gal, some damage but mostly in working order, original teeth and body parts, no foxing... kind of cute, cooks, cleans, sews, no hanky panky .. but I just changed my mind .. Joy. :joyful:

No, I don't anti .. I usually have bought antique dolls in as fine condition as I can .. but sometimes they have no clothes and I sew for them, or they have an
original old body that needs an old repair. I have several miniature tiny bisque and china dolls too .. it takes me at least a month to sew complete outfits for each one of them, such tiny stitches.
    Joy :)
