Featured Mystery Antique Boy and Dog Spill Vase with Double C Mark

Hi there,

I recently came into possession of a roughly 7" spill vase, which looks, to me, like it is either German or Bohemian. It is somewhat bisque, but rather than the chalky feeling, it is slightly more towards a terra cotta feel. It has a lot of tool marks and hand marks from what seems to be hand sculpting. On the underside is a double C mark, which could also be either a CZ, or a CK, or even a CF. I really hope someone can identify it, as I spent quite a while and had no luck. Pictures are attached.

It's a double g in gothic german, I have a specialised book and look if I can find your mark later.

 

Very irritating but i can't find the name behind the initials, they are hundreds of makers with G and impossible to find the good one…

 

Could this be a smoke set? I can't tell if the little patch of green between the foot and the dog is ridged for a match striker? The piece looks to me like a late 19th century German majolica piece. A number of companies like Urbach and Moehling made them.

It can be a striker, I've some with similar item used for scratching, I've not considered the function before, only the marks.
I just found hood as a translation for "hotte" in french, not sure that's the good one.

I guess it could be! I didn't think of that. The area is rough, but it seems somewhat fragile, like it would easily get damaged from too many matches. I guess that wouldn't have mattered back then. I didn't get any email notifications, so sorry for the late reply, and thanks for the help!

 

Thank you for your reply! I didn't get notified so sorry I'm a bit late. It is certainly ridged enough there to strike a match, though it doesn't feel particularly durable. It's such a weird looking piece to have for that purpose. I guess the maker may remain a mystery.
