Do artists paint the same thing more than once? Renoir did two versions of this. The larger is in the Musee d’Orsay. This remained in private hands. There is record of Renoir doing one version at the dancehall, and another in his studio. There are arguments for which is which, but there is agreement that this is the more freely painted, which is an argument for it being done on the spot. This is discussed in the catalogue, which also gives information on the dancehall itself, and its practices, as well as identifying the principle characters depicted.
