My family and I recently moved to a new state with virtually no furnishings for our house. I've done a lot of second hand hunting because I refuse to buy a house full of press board garbage. I found this listed on craigslist and as a firm diy-er I couldn't say no to a resuscitation project. The owners sold it to me for $10 and left it in their driveway so I have zero information on it. Naturally, I know just about nothing about antiques, except that the lack of hardware and the way the joints are made tell me it could be a handmade piece? There is significant damage but that's why I wanted it. The only metal on this table is the nail someone expertly wedged into the front leg (I assume to hold the lower tray in place.) and under the top there is a number stamped: 1373 1/2 Does anyone have any information on this?
20th century American factory made demi-lune table. Wood looks to be mahogany. Styling is French. Possibly as early as 1920 but more likely from the 40s or 50s.
I'm not expert enough to know the wood, but agree with the date. It's got mess-with-me written all over it. Refinish the top and paint over the chipped part? Brown wood is coming back, I'm told.
I hear you regarding furniture. Learning by starting off small and working up to better stuff is what I did too. This is a great place to learn. Welcome
Thank you for that! I feel a little more confident about this being a practice piece for restoration now.
Thank you for saying so! I’m fortunate enough to have my father-in-law’s career’s worth of tools at my disposal as he was a handyman for 40+ years. I’m hoping to put them to good use as I learn how to do some woodworking. The double bonus is that we moved to Richmond where finding antique gems is a dime a dozen. As long as I keep it under control lol!
Yes it does! I’ve seen some gorgeous jewel-toned stains matched with a natural looking wood stain. People have come up with some insanely gorgeous pieces doing that. Painting might be an option until I can make a matching piece to bridge that break. We shall see!
Welcome to the Forum, Drea! Enjoy your table and your new home. I hope we get to see the finished product! Best of Luck!
Thank you so much! What a warm community this has been! I hope to turn out something nice and I'm sure now I'll be asking for plenty of pointers along the way.
Welcome to the forum, Drea. And you will. If you don't find your way back, just ask for directions, we're all happy to help.
