    Well, I am guessing the 1st new pic is the bottom & 2nd pic is the top?
    Clearly different construction, bottom has a rabbeted back and the top has a hand planed bevel. Guesses MARRIED! :singing: with children on the way! :hilarious:

    Yeah, sorry, not a clue here about european furniture, wish i could help more. Wait for other posters, there are europeans in here.

    well, I think we can rule out a marriage… I finally assembled everything in one piece and as you see - the pattern of the veneer follows from the lower to the upper part. IMG_20190206_193454 (Copy).jpg Gesamtansicht 1.jpg IMG_20190206_193457 (Copy).jpg

    I know an US Forum is probably not the best place to discuss continental furniture, it is just that I wasn’t able to find any European forum of such a quality.

    Mein Gott........das heir ist der Internet !:hilarious::hilarious::hilarious:
    Das ist nicht von USA..... ist aus Englander !

    Willcommen mein Herr !.......... von Canada !!!:)

    So...sorry about my bad German.....entschuldigen mir bitte !!! :inpain::inpain:

    Even though I'm not quite sure it is Mahagony, looks a little too yellowish for it... still I am not an expert in woods :/ And yeah...I also think they really made better furniture in those days...It was a different quality because of the different expectations. Furniture stayed in families sometimes for generations...now look, I purchased this cabinet for mere 100 euro… this is an amount you won't be able to buy anything decent even from the ugly Ikea products made of cheapest wood and glued splints and chips :-/

    Ikea is criminal. the trees are from Scandinavia; Poland and Russia; then shipped to ports like Rotterdam or Hamburg; then by train or on the Rhine by ship and then again by lorry - to Italy; there shredded (only !!! simply because it's a few cents less...) and brought to Germany, Netherlands and Scandinavia to be mixed with glue - millions of tons of solvent fumes !!! - and pressed to what they call wood. etc.....
    antiques are too cheap because they are the best recycling we can do.

    Yeah, I see that now, odd that the backs seem to be of different construction.

    It seems that naming the Topic "head scratcher" was not a bad idea eventually:) :(
    By the way; I posted the same pics in a German antiques forum with all the same information... Interestingly enough, despite the fact that Biedermeier is a very own german style, their knowledge about it is even less than here. Germany cut the ties with its history quite exessively. Over many- many years they breeded generations with no interest for the past whatsoever. This is just one of the many bad results :(
