Hello everyone! I was at an auction this weekend and found this pottery plate among a stack of plates that I purchased. It measures 9 1/2" in diameter. I don't know where to begin in trying to figure out who, what, when, and where. I searched Gotheberg but couldn't find anything even close. I'm assuming that's a mark from somewhere in Asia but that's a guess. Is it a modern studio piece? Should I try and clean it and with what? Thanks for whatever help you can provide.
    Don

Was it the Twilight Zone or Outer Limits that had that swirling pattern at the beginning of the show? This reminds me of that.

I don't know anything about the maker's mark, but I'm pretty sure the decoration technique is called hakeme. White slip was applied with a brush while the potter was spinning the bowl on the wheel.

Good link. I'd never heard of it. The mark looks more Korean than Japanese. It seems to be a stylized image

Sorry, folks, I was going to respond sooner but after komokwa's first post I blacked out. Came to this morning in the backyard wearing a tin foil hat and not much else. I'm hoping I didn't do anything too embarrassing but will keep a low profile around the neighborhood for the next few days just in case.
Thanks, Lauragarnet and Bev for your insights. I've got a new area to explore! Don
