Hi, you should put the word baskets in your title to draw the proper attention. Generic "what are these"-type of titles often don't get the eyes of the experts in that field. You can edit your title by clicking on THREAD TOOLS at the top of your thread.
Pine-needle baskets; Taupou has responded to another thread regarding them. They represent a style originated in the Canary Islands, which has since become so widespread, including kits made for amateur craftspeople, that it is no longer possible to identify where they were made or who made them.
These are actually Gullah baskets, made in South Carolina and nearby Sea Islands, made by descendants of slaves brought to the South from Africa during the slave trade. They are made from seagrass and strips of palmetto leaves. Gullah weavers sometimes use longleaf pine needles in some of their baskets, but these are their traditional style (which can be traced back to Africa) sweetgrass baskets, featuring their characteristic flowing design pattern, where the handles are a continuation of the body of the basket. This is the style they are famous for. (Not to be confused with pine needle baskets, from the Canary Islands, off Spain.)
