chinese, japanese or arabic?

dear all

someone once told me that this looked arabic. i have always thought it was chinese but i have never found a similar mark anywhere. how old? mark identification?

The mark and crackled glaze look Chinese to me. The style of the decoration is influenced by Islamic styles.
China has Islamic minorities, not just the Uygurs in the west, but also very old Islamic communities on the east coast. And many centuries of contacts with Islamic countries along the Silk Road.
There were usually Persian diplomats and traders during the intermittent periods of contact with the outside world. The Persians introduced many styles in China, including blue decoration on a white ground, something we now regard as typically Chinese.
Cobalt (blue) and other minerals came mostly from Iran. During times of war along the Silk Road those minerals came from Indonesia.

I love the way you are taking an interest in your heritage, and not carelessly throwing the old 'junk' out. You grew up with so many styles, are already familiar with them, really. If we can fill in some blanks, wonderful.

Dating is a bit difficult, since this is not the 'mainstream' style or production. It could be middle to late Qing, but that is a guesstimate.
Maybe @khl889 knows, but most of the Chinese (and Japanese) members seem to have fled the forum. Too many requests, maybe?

 

perhaps i am now old enough to know the true meaning of "junk" .... and some of these old pieces really do have a place in the family history book

I do not think this is Japanese, most likely 19th c "Kitchen Qing" ware.
