Featured Schreiner Necklace

Do you think that is the original assembly by the maker?Only the pendant is marked but what’s with the pin?

 

I think it is possible this is the original Schreiner assembly. Photos on a plainer background would help, but what I can see looks promising. Not unusual that the pendant would be marked and nothing else.

Your question, "what's with the pin"? Do you mean, why is there a pin mechanism on the pendant? If that is the question, a brooch with a bale can either be worn as a pin or pendant.

Is there a way to easily remove the pendant from the necklace so the pendant could be worn just as a brooch?

It this winds up being all original, it is a very desirable piece.

 

Can be removed so I guess a dual purpose.

The more I look at your pics, I have the feeling that yours is all original.

With the new pics, my best guess is that yours is completely original.

When you compare to the one in the link, lots of similarities. The center cab in the linked one is also plastic, described as "ENORMOUS domed jelly cabochon centerpiece".

Beads on the chain are glass, just like this, and also has the removable pendant.

Schreiner pieces have amazing quality and a solid following. The linked one has earrings too, but I think buyers would be mostly interested in the necklace anyway.

Schreiner's jewelry was basically 1950s-1970, so somewhere in that time frame. For some maker's jewelry, date comes up as important, but not so much with Schreiner.

I also like Kard's better than the one in the link. I've never been lucky enough to find a Schreiner necklace, only brooches. (And precious few of those, just two!) No idea how even to compare value with the unsold BIN in the link. I haven't really paid attention to what is selling Schreiner-wise, but a while back there were so many buyers in the wings that you could throw something up at a .99 cent auction and it would realize top dollar. This was a few years ago though.

Condition is important, but buyers seem to be willing to live with some finish loss in the back of the piece. Chips, scratches, anything missing, not as okay. Kard's seems good but I don't have it in the hand.

Someone mentioned in a description that Schreiner was known for using 2 secondary colors, which is what I think I like about this one - that orange and amber-yellow combination - nice!

Everyone's moms, grandmas and aunts had at least one piece of Weiss, and I grew up thinking it was pretty glamorous, but fun to discover later all this fabulousity!

Be sure to photograph the finish loss, if it's on the front at all, take good close up pics.

If auction, you might want to list at your "happy price". As I said it was a few years ago things were getting strongly bid up. No idea if it is still that way now with Schreiner. Best of luck.

 

Yes, my mom had some Weiss, but not Schreiner. Not even sure where it would have been sold. Lord and Taylor, that kind of store, maybe?

It's a cut above Weiss. Scoutshouse, if you are ever needing some jewel entertainment, browse Morning Glory antiques/Schreiner, or search Schreiner on Ebay.

One note on Ebay, you may run into a few pieces claiming to be "unsigned" Schreiner. Some may well be Schreiner as certain pieces were unsigned, but others are just hopeful and not the real deal.

Reminds me. One time I was looking at rhinestone brooch completed SOLD Ebay listings (can't recall why as it's a pretty broad search)...anyway, saw a sold Schreiner ruffle pin, not just a ruffle pin, but this one had a dragon's breath center stone -- ACK for $79 BIN. Unsigned so the seller didn't know what they had. Listing just said "vintage flower pin" or something. The ruffle pins are so distinct, not always signed. Someone got a screaming deal.

 

I did look today, partly to see if any were unsigned because I wondered if my friend's piece (below) is Schreiner...

That's where I found this unsigned piece where the lister states 3 times in italics it is Schreiner and if it's not a book piece, it should be

Dramatic Schreiner Dangle Brooch ~ Amethyst & Jade Peking Glass



Here's my friend's... I was just fooling around with the camera, and didn't get a shot of the back. It just had a presence, but unsigned. Usually, a pin with drops like that would be better balanced from the top, but the width of the pin wasn't enough to prevent drooping - I thought it might be part of something else. I think it did have a bale, but can't say for sure today.

 

The Peking glass one looks well made. I'm better making a guess on the classic unsigned Schreiner (ruffle and dome pins, etc.) and by the seller's admission may even be "one of a kind". But if it has inverted stones, that's a good sign. Certainly could be a Schreiner then.

Your friend's piece is interesting. Need to see the back. Definitely seems like a designer, if not Schreiner, probably someone good. Get close ups of the stones if you can.

My friend has excellent taste, if she does think so herself!

It does drive me a little crazy when she says donated a bunch of "just costume" jewelry to her Croatian themed singing group!! I'd LOVED to have seen it, because pieces like this pin keep showing up!

I stopped saying, "You never know about costume jewelry..." She's been picking this town since the 50s and is pretty savvy, but costume isn't her style - and that's what she bought it for!

BTW, her piece is not champagne color - it's bright, clear white.
