I have had this old Asian box for many years. I think it is lacquer with gold threading design. It is 7" across and 3" high. It is a shiny black color with a reddish design on top and gold threading around the top and bottom. It feels like paper mache but heavier. I never had shown to my friend who was antique porcelain specialist at the Met. I do not know if it is Japanese or Chinese only it looks Asian. I am hoping that with our world wide experts some one would help me ID this piece.

Beautiful box, Greg. I think it could be Cambodian.
