It looks to me like a decorated ceramic ball. This way around the decoration looks like a rooster:

I have this black egg-like thing:


I've been told the character impressed on top means "chicken" in Chinese, and that it was placed in a nest to encourage laying. It is the size of a large chicken egg. Maybe yours is something along the same line?

 

Yep MOS, Grandma put similar size stones, even light bulbs in the nests to encourage the hens to lay. It must have worked as she put 5 children thru major universities mostly during the Depression with her egg money.
