Hi SIS!!! Love BOTH of your chairs!! Especially, your caneing job, and there’s no way I still have that kind of hand and arm strength to do a rush seat anymore!!!! ‘Fraid I’d have to bite the bullet and get it done now-a-days!! But SO TOTALLY worth it!!

Mag arrived today, pretty sure it's the same chair so still only 2 known, this one & Bolles chair at the MET, kinda figured it would be. I may ride up & see it, only 100 miles or so from me in Asheville.

Weird reading a 50 year old Antiques mag, it's like going back in time, first thing i notice is ALL the photographs are black & white and some of the ads had prices for furniture. We had color photographs in '67 didn't we? Another thing since it was a Jan edition, it listed all the exhibitors at the Americana show in NYC and the price of admission was $2.50 gee wiz, that was certainly reasonable.

Guess what day it is? GUESS WHAT DAY IT IS!!
Nope, It's not hump day, it's the day before the sale tomorrow on that pilgrim spindle chair. One needs to be mindful when messing around with furniture this early that it is in fact period. There are a few, a very few woodworkers as time rolls on that still build reproductions of this early furniture in exactly the same way using exactly the same tools as they did in the 17th century. And, after a hundred years or so the reproductions begin to look period, which they are not.
Having said all that, this spindle chair up for sale tomorrow i am 99% sure is a period piece. Early chairs are notoriously uncomfortable so they really have no function around the house other than to look at. My aim is to steal it for $500 or less, estimate is 500-700. If 2 or more people realize it is period and there is also another chair at the MET in the Bolles collection that was built in the same shop.....well, this theft i am planning ain't gonna happen.

Register for the sale if you wish! I don't buy old chairs/beds because they are not used, i have a rule about that. I am ONLY interested if i can steal it! :greedy::mask:

Well, i don't know, i was saying IF there are 2 or more people besides me that realize what this chair is, it's not going to be cheap. And i am only interested if it IS cheap because chairs like this really have very little function today.

Both lovely chairs. I agree that it is a question of how much you like the piece and whether it will be really used and loved and appreciated in your home. Restoration always costs too much unless the piece is really good and special. I have a couple of what I call rescue pieces which have been restored [!] and I get pleasure out of them every day. We do have a sort of obligation to care for the pieces we find for whatever purpose. They're not making them any more End of rant :)

I did register awhile back but then I often do without bidding. No, if it goes for the price you're hoping you should definitely have it . The research and education you've given here is more than enough. Good luck!!

Well ok, Thanks! but i am only going 300-400 bucks hammer because of BP & tax which is about 30% these days.
I don't collect furniture for decoration, if i can't use it i don't mess with it, making an exception on this chair.
    30 mins till sale

Yep, nothing beat a try but failure!
I do better at auctions that have mostly furniture & many 100k pieces and up, things slip thru the cracks at those sales, no slipping today!
