I was wandering around today and flipped over this decrepit, old frame and to my wondering eyes did appear a more modern copy of an old ad for a Stevengraph. A quick check on my phone indicated that it was an antique and from Coventry England too! I grabbed it before they realized their mistake (vintage), and the old nasty thing came home with me.

After some research I found that some people here know about Stevengraphs, so I thought I might get some more details. @2manybooks found a Wikipedia link that gave the range from 1862-1930s?

I found one with the lighter colored coach and the brown mat that had cited an 1870 mark. (Some have redder coaches.) Apparently @Any Jewelry has some Stevengraphs and of course, @Ownedbybear probably has at least four.

Mine is small at 6 inches by 2 inches, while the frame is 9.5 inches by 7 inches. Under the embroidery it says: "Woven in silk by Thomas Stevens, inventor and manufacturer, Coventry and London (Registered)" Under that it says "The Good Old Days"

Any thoughts, ideas, comments, etc greatly appreciated.

Oh that is an optical illusion and not missing glass.

Gorgeous, Kiko, and so much fun.
Yes, I have two Coventry silk pictures, I don't think they are by Stevens though.

Oops. I thought your post said you had two. My mistake. Sorry.

I may have said it in my usual confusion, or I may have checked it at the time and saw they were by Stevens. At the moment I can only remember they are Coventry silk, but have no idea where they are.:(
Do you have a link to the thread?

Needlepoint art | Antiques Board (antiquers.com) I am often surprised at what I said here. I forget things all the time.

Thanks.:) Yes, I probably checked the landscape at the time, and then remembered the Gypsy caravan.
I remember the landscape is a little faded but very silky. The caravan still has some vivid colours.

I was wondering about it being faded. I have to protect all my Antique Chinese silk embroidery from the sun as I know they used brightly colored silk.

The fading of this piece is especially upsetting because of the incredibly fine work. Each inner roundel is about the size of a silver dollar thumbnail_IMG_8141.jpg thumbnail_IMG_8142.jpg

Yes, always keep them out of direct sunlight. Etchings and watercolours too.
    Stunning, and beautiful.

It makes me so sad to see a wonderous thing poorly taken care of.

Do you mean the glass covering the piece is UV?

I had certainly forgotten about the earlier thread. Good of you to think to search the forum - and thanks for reminding me!

It is really nice that yours has what is probably an original mat, with the credits and title.

UV filtering glass is helpful, but not enough to allow permanent display in a sunny location. It does not eliminate all of the potentially harmful wavelengths, and all light can eventually cause fading.

I search the forum so I don't waste people's time repeating themselves. :)

Oh. I see what you mean. I have all my pieces needing framing put in museum UV glass. The problem with old silk embroidery is that it is very fragile. I had a piece where the silk disintegrated, when I had to remove it from a damaged frame. Only the embroidery remained with tattered silk. It was such a shame - A large piece, but the frame couldn't be saved. I still have the work but I haven't found anyone who said they could salvage it. I have no such skills with materials. I can hardly sew on a button. Thank you for explaining.
