  1. Dish (1).jpg Dish 1.jpg Hello,

I'm new here so I hope this is in the correct thread. Does anyone recognize this signature. It's on a small dish from Bavaria.

    Thank you so much!

Welcome, Leslie. There is a pottery, glass & porcelain forum, but the regulars will look no matter where something is posted. Please do not post a duplicate, this will be fine.

I'm not one of the porcelain people, but have been hanging around long enough to be pretty sure you will be told signature is that of a hobbyist painter who bought the blank.

Pretty plate, but anybody's guess on that siggy is as good as anybody else's!!! In INH's posted images, in the first one...... do you suppose those two smaller "oo's" with the squiggles underneath are meant to be "gg's" and if so (HAHA) does that change anything??????:D

    I think it is gg.
    H.E. Liggett ?

Likely we won’t find who that is.

I assumed they are Gs & the name is Liggett. What it changes is that it makes it pronounceable. :)

    Yes, hobbiest painted.

Like all artist, some are better than others.
Your plate is nicely done, by someone who had some talent.

Value is minimal for decorative purposes. $10 or so.

  11. Thank you all so much! I've never heard of the term "hobbiest" So basically someone bought a plain dish and painted it themselves? Even though it says Bavaria? Hmmmm. Here I was thinking it was an antique by some famous artist!:) You guys are really great for answering. I have some things that I inherited from my mother-in-law that she received from her grandmother and great grandmother. No markings though. :( I would like to post the pics and see if anyone knows anything about them. I'll post in the porcelain, glass and pottery forum.

Yes, china painting was a hobby in which white blanks were purchased to be painted.

Very popular in the early 1900s.

A very decent hobby painter: it's astonishing how good some of them were.

The stamp with Bavaria is the company that made the blank
