Hello. I am not very familiar with antiques or how to id this cabinet. I picked this up today and was hoping to find out some information on it (year, history, really anything you can provide) and value, if possible. I really liked it and I got it for what I think is a good deal, I'm just not experienced with things like this and wanted to make sure.

If you have any information to share about this piece or a price range for its value, I'd really appreciate it. It is in pretty good shape with only some wear on the top and one chipped area that you can see in the top left of the picture. The key is with it and the lock works well, if that helps.

Thank you for your time. I look forward to exploring this site.

    Thanks again,

    John

Turn of the century, give or take a decade ,walnut curio cabinet. They are pretty common, seems like everybody had one. In N. fla youd be lucky to get $100-150.

Can't tell enough from the pic but I'd say it looks 1970s give or take a decade

Well, we're all over the place on this one. I think circa 1940 and English or Continental. Could be a bit later since they seemed to make similar things on in to the 50s. Can't tell what is going on in the center of the back inside there. Does that white convex column thing light up?

Thanks to everyone for the feedback so far. The back column is covered with fabric. It does not light up. I can try to get some better pictures this afternoon.

The one Komokwa found is nearly identical. The unfortunate thing about Pinterest is that there is often no information contained within the postings :sour: That fabric center column seems to be an original feature but is quite odd. This reinforces that these are not American to me. I see the OP's has straight glass panels on the two sides vs. the muti-paned sides that follow the curve on the second one. Makes me think they may have been replaced at some point.

Brad, the Pinterest one said something about DIY project.....that led me to believe that at one time it looked like John D's , only with different side panels .
The fabric could have been swapped out when it was painted.

& you're right .....you can see pic there but unless you join.....any info is spotty at best.

It's not screaming Victorian at me either. These don't sell for much here if you can sell them at all.

Thanks for the time and input from everyone. I wasn't planning to sale, I just didnt know the value or history of it. I'm not familiar with anything like that but bought it for $100, which seemed like a good deal to me, with my limited knowledge.

Thanks again. It was interesting seeing all the different opinions. Even though I'm not an antique collector, I'll still participate in the site as I can. I enjoy seeing all of the items and discussions here.

    Take care,

    John

It was. A new piece made of similar materials would be close to $1000, so you got a steal if you're just going to use it. Brown wood, as those in the trade call it, isn't selling these days. The pre-WWII 20th century pieces especially tend to be a good deal if you're a buyer.

John D, please do participate whenever you can.

Thank goodness the founders (staff) of this forum didn't give me a "serious collector" test before admitting me to this forum. I've always been just a magpie* in my hunting/gathering activities. :D

As a woman who owns 500 pairs of earrings......!

I've seen cabinets like that. The Pinterest one has been upcycled. The OP's will be 30s maybe, not 40s unless VERY late, we weren't making much stuff then for other reasons. Otherwise, 50s perhaps. But yes, these got made up until very recently here - a company called Lexterten did similar.

Ah, having seen the straight sides, I think well post WW2. Easier to mass produce.
