New use for old radios! That's kind of neat.

The inside really looks quite old.

I was wondering if it was ever a radio or just meant to look like one?. Whichever way round I think it has been a jewellery box for a long time. The 'dial' is cardboard which makes me think it's pretending to be a radio.

What an odd interesting thing. Inside looks late 19th/early 20th. The lucite or whatever banding looks Art Deco. And what on earth does that dial say?

Londres , Roma, Madrid ,Brussels ,Lisbon and some others I can't read almost looks like it's been done in pen and ink rather than printed. Lots of numbers- I'll try to get a photo but the cover is glass and reflective.

That's awesome! The keyhole looks like it was made from a religious rose slide medal.

I've seen those funky 1950s ones, but this does look earlier. Neat.

Maybe someone has done a DIY job on an earlier plain jewellery box? That would maybe explain why the quality of the interior is rather better than the exterior?. If the interior is late 19c early 20th and the exterior is more Deco? Did that make sense or am I rambling?!. Off to bed zzzzzzz.

I think this was an expensive item when first sold.
Beveled glass, tucked velvet, satin trim. Appears to have been well made.
    It's also been well used.

The radio station names are a clue to age, thinking about it. Those have to be late 20s into the early 30s at least. Probably 30s. I think the idea that this is an older box which has been embellished makes perfect sense. That marbled lucite is seen on 1940s and 50s handbags. But the interior with that nice silk velvet is typical of late 19th C jewellry boxes.

I love it! I agree, the interior looks antique and beautifully made, and the exterior could have been 'built' around it at a later date to jazz it up.
The hand (is that what you call it?) looks hand cut, and the beading around the base is a bit irregular. So yes, I would think a home job.
I can imagine a loving hubby making this in the '40s as a surprise for his wife.

I bet that silk velvet was a deep purple once.

I think its fair to say it was never a radio.

The station pointer is aluminium and too wide and the graph is very crude and the numbers and lettering too large.

The station graphic cards can still be bought today for LW SW enthusiasts.
