Help with an oil painting please

Discussion in 'Art' started by nifflertreasures, May 1, 2019.

  1. I bought this oil painting at a thrift store a few days ago. I can't seem to find out anything about the artist. It is oil on canvas, signed Denise Yadermann, then a word I can't figure out, then a date of 1951. If anyone can shed some light on this painting it would be much appreciated. I think Denise Nadermann is a good interpretation of the signature... is she the same Denise as the linked poster? I have no idea.

Also have no idea if she is the Denise who did the cover of the following 1951 "monthly review of the French mission of the church of Jesus Christ of the Latter-day Saints"

But there are not a lot "Denise Nadermanns" around.

    Illegible word might be "Mars."

I think this is a painter who aspired to tourist art. Northern Europe, maybe Netherlandish. That word might be Maart, which is the Netherlands word for March. Look for some desperately devalued post war northern currency. That might be Fl.

L'Etoile was a Belgium Church of the Latter Day Saints publication.

I'm on my phone and not my computer right now, so I don't have it in front of me, but there's something in that PDF that I linked to that I believe says the artist is from Paris. It's possible I remember incorrectly or misread a Google translate.

Granted, no idea if the artist that did that cover is the artist that did the op's painting.

  8. The LDS connection is very possible, as I bought the painting at the LDS run Deseret Industries thrift store in Eastern Idaho.

Found another L'etoile article written in French by Denise Nadermann on topic of Monet and Impressionism. http://www.lafeuilledolivier.com/Etoile/1954/195405_FR.pdf No evidence of her work/style. Agree with the "aspires to tourist art" comment of @moreotherstuff

fits with the French article by Nadermann, so Mars would be the month, not the place ... doubt France had launch capabilities in 1951 that landed them on the red planet. :greyalien:

Doesn't look Dutch to my Dutch eyes.;)
My first thought was Alsace, which would fit in with what looks like a timber framed house, the German name Nadermann, and the French article.

I love it when a plan comes together. :D

Not sure even 100% identification will mean much to the hammer price, but always interesting to play with these little mysteries.

L'Etoile was published in Belgium and Nadermann a member of the Church's French mission. She quite possibly could have been Belgian and the scene there. Don't think tourist work though. Just amateur effort.

So we have concensus: painted on Mars in a French mission with a hammer by a nobody there, in 1951. Mystery solved.
