Featured wood basket ? arts and crafts ?

45 centimeters tall, wood and iron. I think it might be English and new gothic due to the heptagonal base.
as usual all ideas welcome. TIA.

It almost looks like it was harvested from a piece of furniture - the way the carving cuts off...

 

That heavy look makes me think Central Europe rather than England.

 

Agreed, I don't think it's one of ours.

 

Don't know what it WAS, but COULD be used for many things, including for newspapers and magazines!!

 

I was thinking it could be used to hold a plant pot?

The style kind of looks like Arts & Crafts meets Art Nouveau to me.

why ? wouldn't it have a round foot instead of a heptagonal ?

UK, but that doesn't mean it's British.

 

Oh, and I've also seen round tops with a shaped indent if that makes sense.

 

Nicely rendered aesthetic movement daisies. Thinking a bit earlier, maybe 1880s.

 

thanx, will research a bit in that direction when a bit spare time is available. perhaps the allusions to medieval elements made me think of neo-gothic but are aesthetic.

 

The flower carving reminds me of items I have seen similar in France.
