Looks like it reads “aus dankbarkeit”, out of gratitude.

Check out Biedermeier style. 1830-1850 Germany.

Every exterior surface on that piece was cut and polished by hand.

    Edit: correct typo

Certainly is a lovely thing. It looks like it is supposed to be opened often with that large handle (?) on the top. I see wrapped candies rather than decorative, but I am sadly lacking in knowing anything about such things. I just wanted to compliment your eye.

To think I wasn’t sure and had to go back to buy it , must remember if in doubt I can always feel regret later .

    To get your attention,

I have a similar piece, includes the phrase
    "ädder Freundshaft" I understand Friendship
I can't find a translation for the first word, "ädder" the third letter is not d, not known to me.

The engraving starts with Aus, then that line, then the names of five Herren. Its dated 1857.

I found the engraving on my glass in a google document looked like a German Temperance article in a paper or the paper was produced by the temperance movement.
