Hello glass-people! I posted in the Silver group earlier a small mystery I had with what was sold to me as a “marmalade jar”. I now know it’s actually a sugar bowl. The lid and body came together and it looks like it indeed came original and not a marriage from other sets. Would anyone recognize the body of the jar? The pattern perhaps? I know who made the lid specialized in silverplate and sometimes did sterling pieces like this one. It was suggested that I post it here to see if anyone recognized the glass. Apparently companies sometimes worked together to manufacture pieces. The lid is F.B Rogers Silver Co.
sidebar.... Mom had this one and used it for honey & jam on the holidays. Whatever it's called....I know it by a different use.
For me the metal cover says newer as does the gray cut decoration./ I would suspect am importer or retailer ordered these with the metal cover to cut down on breakage. I think of these as jams, marmelades etc.
I've an almost identical one albeit with a glass lid. Ma bought it in the late 60s or thereabouts. Dunno who made it, but I suspect it's Czech, we imported a lot from there.
I'd call it a jam pot. Here's one with an undertray that's pretty close. Keep in mind that's an "askin' price", not necessarily a "gettin' price".
The silver people ID’d mine yesterday and shockingly fast: http://vi.raptor.ebaydesc.com/ws/eB...y=13943&pm=1&ds=0&t=1559443002531&cspheader=1 It’s even the same company and patern no. as mine. The glass on the otherhand probably came from somewhere else since this company did not produce glass items.
Always be suspect of what you read online from a seller..... just because this JEWELER calls it a sugar....... don't mean I'm taking his word as gospel !!! I just ran thru 20 pages of eBay Glass Sugar Bowls..... only 5 items looked like yours........ & to my mind , they're all identified in error.
Apologies @BMRT, that is my fault. In the Silver Forum, we were trying to determine if these pieces were originally together, or a marriage. When discovered this as originally together, I did not make a point to explain how Sellers ads can be wrong. Sorry all!
I have a mustard jar in this exact same shape. It is smaller because it's a mustard and not a marmalade. My jar is etched with the Rose Point etch so I know it was made by Cambridge Glass. Mine has no lid because some sterling silver scrapper traded it in for a few lousy dollars. But . . . it is a fairly generic shape. If it was made by Cambridge, it might be their 8 oz Marmalade in the Pristine Line. .
One of mine in this shape is a mustard, too. It's 2 1/2" tall, excluding the lid. I'm not sure what the etch is (have never looked it up) but it's not Rose Point:
