Here's another piece where I have a name - but no info on the artist. Perhaps there just isn't any to find. I think the frame age about matches the date that's written in sharpie on the frame - which is 1974 - along with the name Sylvia Nakamura. Also written is "Rembrant" - which - this doesn't look like Rembrandt himself - and I don't think this is a copy of one of his -that I've found - maybe just "after the style of". Anyhow, another one of those too good/unique to pass up for 10 bucks.

Is the canvas signed Sylvia Nakamura or only the frame?

    Only the frame.

Perhaps inspired by one of his many Portrait of a Bearded Man. I suspect Sylvia was the owner, not the artist, and that the painting is decorative. Looks like a Mexican frame.

Forgot dimensions - the painting itself is about 18x13 inches

To my eye the subject in my painting has more the hat and clothing of this Rembrandt self portrait:

I bought this perhaps a few months after her death date in a Salvation Army store about 5 miles from Springfield VA ....so you're probably right on with that.

Rembrandt is spelled incorrectly on the stretcher (Rembrant).

Maybe Sylvia thought it was after Rembrandt, which is why she wrote it on the frame.
It reminds me more of Dürer. The style of painting, the solemn look of the sitter, the clothing and hat.

Or everyone has never gotten the hang of it.:D

The painter turned the 'thing' that looks like a kashmir shawl into a fur collar. The mood of the painting and the physique and attitude of the sitter are more like Willem Drost paintings than Rembrandt's, imo. Willem Drost paintings are always more pensive. But wdik.

Another good source for painting identification (if one knows the artist) is wikiart.org, the "visual art encyclopedia."
