This little guy looks like a more modern river cane basket perhaps, but I am not super confident in that conclusion. Anyone know anything about this basket? It is 7.5x5x5

If you are thinking Cherokee or Choctaw cane baskets, this is not one. It may be a type of cane, but the structure (particularly the foot and base) are typical of baskets made in the Philippines.

Ahh I see. Thank you guys for the info! I am glad I'm beginning to be able to identify materials, however pinning down styles is still something I am learning. What about the base makes this typical of Philippines? How does it differ from native American bases? I suppose it's that there is that little lip there. The native American baskets are more just one piece.

the rims, designs, colors, the base...and the way the basket is woven.....all play an important part...

A good reference to begin with is a book by Bryan Sentance - Art of the Basket: Traditional Basketry from Around the World. Thames & Hudson, 2001. Later republished as a paperback, with a slightly different title - Basketry: A World Guide to Traditional Techniques.
