I'm trying to find out if this vase is anything special. A colleague wondered if it was an old Wedgwood piece, although I haven't been able to find any marks on it. It has black and yellow decorations on the surface, in addition to decorations matching the color of the vase. Greek key style motif around rim and edge of base. Crude hole in bottom. It is 7-1/2 inches high and 8-1/2 inches in diameter at the rim, weighing 4 pounds. Can anyone tell me anything about it? Thanks! ... Dave

    Hi,
I am guessing the hole in the bottom was from a lamp support. The chip on the top edge would say the lamp was damaged and someone wanted a nice terra cotta vase.

Not like any Wedgwood I've ever seen. Trust the decoration and figure it's Japanese. Too bad about the rim damage. An interesting piece.

Thanks for the quick response. Do you think the damage negates any value, or is it unusual enough that someone would still want it?

To me the shape is more of a planter or jardiniere. Someone punched a hole for drainage. It could of been sold with a scored circle in clay at the bottom as a guide to punch out the drainage hole. It would be amazing with a bonsai plant.

Hopefully someone can give enough info to make it salable. As a generic listing it will be a tough sell. All I can think of to say is molded terracotta with bi-color sprigging. (Not positive about the terracotta, but it looks that way to me.)

I think good keywords would be "geisha" and "butterfly" since there probably are collectors of both.

Does anyone know what the object below the women is? It looks like a boat to me, but oddly stylized.

Not sure what happened to my post here?

Regardless, now that I see the new photos, I agree that it's a boat.

I thought it was a curtain. Can you show the other end of it?

Perhaps a stage? Don't know why it would be angled, though.

She's in a boat, holding a carp with a butterfly. Hm. Must google on the symbolism.

That's a cat not a carp. Unless carp have developed legs. ;)

Is there a string for the butterfly held by the other woman's hand (that's up in the air?)
