    I think it's just a derringer with a revolver but I'm not 100% sure

    >And the second one just wore her "best skirt and waist" with all the jewelry she owned and carried the derringer because she was THE crack shot of the Ladies Baptist Shooting and Archery Club, AND because her mother told her NOT to have it in the photo................................................<

    :hilarious:

At that time Annie Oakley was well known for her shooting performances in BB Cody's Wild West Show. There were many different Wild West Shows touring the country at that time. I have no doubt it is a young woman and not an ancester of Bonnie Parker. I have a hard time seeing the bracelets or any small detail in this picture because of the angle you have taken the picture. If I'm really interested in one of your pic, I have to download it and try to change its perspective by rotating it so that it will be straight on. I do enjoy your wonderful pictures, but my old eyes and turning my creaky neck give me trouble seeing the details.

As to the lady with plant, Victorians went gaga over botanical gardens, conservatories/glass enclosed gardens, and the bigger the better. The common Joes and Josephines unable to have the glass enclosures went all out on stuffing their homes with plants.

Here is the conservatory at the Biltmore estate in Ashville, NC, one of the many Vanderbilt family's estates. Biltmore was built c1890 by George W. Vanderbilt II. He was an uncle of Consuelo Vanderbilt who married "Sunny" the 9th Duke of Marlborough, a 1st cousin of Winston Churchill.

The gun, a revolver, because the barrel revolves after fired to engage a new round, ( round = bullet ) is traditionally know as a Saturday Night Special ( not to be confused with a late night all time great TV music program , produced by Burt Sugarman..) , and was manufactured in a host of different model designs in a wide variety of rim fire ( as opposed to center fire ..) caliber rounds by an even greater number of companies , great and small.

The main features are 5 or 6 rounds , in a compact , small grip handle design , with with a hidden unguarded trigger that popped out only when the gun was cocked.

It was most effective at close range and easily concealed in purse , muff, pocket belt or boot.

In the photo , it's nothing more than a prop.

The photo is not clean enough for me to provide an accurate identification of the precise model.

    Phew....:hungover:

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

Scantic, I think you have mentioned before that you don't have a scanner that could be used on the photos. I sometimes find that the angles at which they are photographed make it harder to analyze them. Any chance you could look directly down at the images when taking the photos so the angles are not skewed? I have done this with cased photos (ambros, etc.) and it works pretty well.

    Just a suggestion to consider...

Mansons2005 Nasty by Nature, Curmudgeon by Choice

Which makes Winston and Anderson Cooper 2nd or 3rd cousins, 2 or 3 times removed - I forget the actual connection

And Winnie's mum was an American as well.............

It is a revolver but isn't there something odd about the trigger guard?
Is the gun so small a loop would be as well?

Which is why I thought it was a Derringer Revolver, but I'm not sure. Not a gun expert.

there is no trigger guard on this type of weapon...
    Here's an 1875 - 80 American Alaska 38 rimfire , similar to the one she's holding .

Her gun looks partially cocked , thus the trigger is protruding from it's housing , somewhat.

I think it's a Yeti pelt in the first picture.

My guess is that the second picture is theatrical, probably amateur. Maybe the girl was playing a male role, but not to the point of indelicacy.

Winston's mother, Jennie Jerome, certainly had an interesting life to put it mildly. I have the 2 volume biography Jennie, The Life of Lady Randolph Churchill by Ralph Martin. Boy, my life has been dull, humdrum, in comparison. Back in that day the impoverished nobility looked for a wealthy American heiress to save the family estates, and parents of wealthy American heiresses combed the nobility market for a title to add to their possessions. Love didn't enter the picture for the grubbing parents of these matches on either side of the big pond. Consuelo Vanderbilt was very much in love with a young man that her mother felt wasn't socially high enough for her daughter. The mother was the one that approached the Duke who supposedly jumped at the offer. Today the daughters would probably flip off their parents wishes.

BTW, a few years ago,I had my picture taken sitting on that Conservatory wrought iron bench. Hmmmm... wonder in a 100 years or so if people will speculate that I most have been a notable person to be in those surroundings. I highly recommend anyone in the Ashville, NC, area take the time to tour the Biltmore. The house itself is the largest American home in the country. The estate has it all: history, architecture, furnishings, antiques, gardens, scenic vistas of the Smoky Mts., ...

A derringer is traditionally a much smaller ,one to four shot weapon , with the rounds solidly in place in a barrel that does not move . The trigger is of a similar design.

Bakersgma, I just looked at the photo again with "fresh eyes" and low and behold it is an animal's head in profile including an open mouth with full dentition in the lower jaw (sharp spike-y teeth) -- the mouth/teeth show up just above the elbow of the woman's arm if you enlarge the photo.
