American Can Company Lid? Age?

Hello everyone - I'm confused on this item. I don't normally wander into the world of primitives but you never know what surprises you'll find in a box lot. I'm assuming it's some type of lid for canning. It measures 3 1/4" across. Is there is specific name for this type of lid? Age? Googling has gotten me nowhere. Any help would be much appreciated. Sorry - posted without pictures, then forgot to resize pictures, then posted an extra picture! Going to be one of those days!

 

While I saw many things from there, we were guinea pigs with stuff without labels...from US Testing also in JC right next door to ACC this is not familiar. I wonder about it for I wouldn't think they would use this on different items but maybe... It shows some of what they did.
If you wish to part with it please let me know for I have nothing from that beloved late Uncle.

Just curious but . . . I can make out the following words (or abbreviated words) on the lid(?) -- strawb(erry?), pear, cherry, plum, quince(?).

Can any others here make out the rest of the wording?

 

From the twelve o'clock position clockwise - Curr. (currants?). Cherry, Tomat., Blackb., Plum, Quince, Peach, Strawb,, Pear, Raspb.

No problem - I just can't figure out how you marked which fruit was in the can? Maybe it's missing some kind of arrow?

I wondered the same thing. Off the top of my head I can't think of any other way to signify a can's contents except an arrow made stationary somehow when that particular fruit/vegetable came off the "fill line." Or perhaps an arrow pointing to the proper fruit/vegetable was lightly impressed into the metal lid as the can came off the "fill line."

Or, I wonder if that is a "bottom" lid for all the cans to "remind" buyers of the various fruits/vegetables available to be bought. Perhaps the "top" lid was stamped/impressed with only the name of the fruit/vegetable inside that "run" of cans.

Hmmmmmmm.

I wondered the same thing, about it mentioning different fruits... guess there was a paper label designating which fruit the can held?

Maybe there was a paper label with a cut-out just wide enough to expose a single fruit name and obscure the others?

 

PS..the American Can Factory is now a condo complex in Jersey City (I remember it too as it was so many years ago. )

 

Yes it is! When it first was offered they gave new tenants 'free' Fart...err...'Smart' cars.

 

This was my thought Pat. The label had the actual contents.
