this chair came out of an estate with some very nice mid 1800’s furniture. Trying to learn the style and age of this chair.

    TIA, Bryan

one might call that a flemish hall chair. they were still making old looking ones in 1900 at least.

This is a beautiful chair. Does anyone know what this man is working on? I see he has his foot on a pedal. Hmm.

I will suggest its pedal operated sharping stone, for sharping cutting tools. That's a really nice chair!

What kind of wood does it appear to be? Walnut?

It is dark like Black Walnut but I am terrible with woods. Thanks for the help this estate has some cool early furniture. If you are in south central Ohio the sale starts tomorrow

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

Were you running the sale, @Brywil1970 , or attending? In either case, I hope it went well for you!

He's spinning wool using a spinning wheel--a lot of textile work in pre-industrial England used to be done by men (including embroidery and lacemaking).

It looks to me as if he is using a foot pump to turn a grinding stone, to sharpen his tool. And the stretcher configuration looks late 19th century to me, a revival piece. I can't get a good look at the wood grain. Interesting motif! Someone had an axe to grind!
