Silver question #3 Kappa Kappa Gamma BOWL, 1940s or earlier --no pic

I don't have a photo, but can describe.

Marked "Sterling" bowl (didn't recognize maker's mark off hand when I was there) but bowl was a plain style, nice enough, would guess 1940s or earlier. 8" across top, tapered down and 3" high. Side engraved with a large "KKG" and the owner said it was her grandmother's Kappa Kappa Gamma bowl.

Question #3: Any idea whether older sterling sorority pieces are desirable above melt down?

 

No photograph? With seeing the bowl, my answer would be a qualified yes. A bit of seasonality though. If you're thinking of reselling on eBay, I'd wait until the Fall semester is underway.

Was hoping you might check in, Debora. I know you've commented on sorority items before. Thank you. If I wind up purchasing it, yes fall would make sense.

Reason for no photo... it was at a sale where there were a number of sterling items where we sort of arranged that I would come back and make an offer after seeing the things. In the end I wound up taking a few pieces of the flatware, but just made notes on the bowl. Just curious if the offer should assume it might sell a bit above scrap.

If you are asking if you should offer more than scrap. On this one I would say no.
You want to be fair, but you also want to make a profit. So if this should go well above, then that was your lucky piece. If it doesn't, you'll still get scrap back.

 

Good point. No, I wouldn't offer more than scrap. I wouldn't even offer scrap. Not to sound cheap, but let's say it winds up selling for scrap on Ebay -- I have all the work of listing, shipping, plus fees (and taxes potentially) so if I offered scrap, and it sold for scrap I'd loose money. The one place that buys silver here (a coin shop) is a total rip off, paying way below scrap, etc. So the seller doesn't have good options either.

I have to sort the whole thing out. Seller really wants to sell the items to me, I really want to be fair to both of us (I think she wants that too.) So I'm going to have to estimate... based on Ebay prices, how this all might work. A bit of a learning curve for me.

 

Design and condition matter, of course. But does it say KKG in Latin letters or Greek (as it should?)

Good point.

Seller didn't hesitate the minute I lifted the bowl to look at the bottom, "That's my grandmother's Kappa Kappa Gamma bowl." I actually thought it might have said KKG. (But I'll check when I go back). Large letters, fancy font, did seem to be more than just a monogram, but excellent point.
