Floral still life water painting signed and a oil painting of a Chinese or Japanese junk

    These two I picked up for a tener

    The water color is 17.8" X 23" and signed Paline Ustal maybe

    The Chinese junk painting is a nice souvenir. Many were made, but I like them. It has condition issues though.

    Salme Utsal , born March 7, 1907 in Estonia , died November 25, 1995, was an Estonian-Canadian painter .

    She was the daughter of Hans Martin Mickelsen and Helene Mikkelsen and married to Karl Utsal. She graduated from the State School of Crafts in Tallinn in 1929 and conducted self-study on trips to France, Belgium and Germany. At the end of World War II , she came to Sweden as a fugitive and was an artist in Sweden for a period. She appeared in the exhibition Estonian and Latvian art which was shown at Liljevalch's art gallery in 1946. She later emigrated to Montreal where she appeared as an artist.

    Thanks Jivvy For the biography on Salme Utsal. I was not seeing her first name as Salme and was not absolutely sure about the last name. I emailed the granddaughter to see if she remembers the painting and for more history of the Artist.
    There is not any information on sales by this artist that I have come across in my searches. The granddaughters are prolific oil and water color artist in Canada.

    Got a response from the Artist Granddaughter a few minute ago.

    Hello Mugzy,
    That’s great! I have no way of knowing, but my grandmother was painting in Montreal in the 50’s to the early 80’s.. Do you have a photo of the painting? Sometimes she made more than one variation of a painting. If by chance we still have one similar I may be able to give you a better idea.
