Featured Malachite Necklace Vintage or reworked?

I’m wondering….as always….about the construction of this necklace.
The glass disc beads are proper old I think ( apart from one which may be the give-away), the tiny seed pearls are real and also look old. The beads I have no idea, fairly battered, could be years old or fairly modern, and that beautiful huge chunk of Malachite…..when were those popular?
The string looks modern, so is this a recent rework of random pieces or is it feasible that it’s all original but restrung?

    Thanks for any ideas!

It’s an amazing stone, I sometimes think it doesn’t get the credit it deserves.

I love malachite too. To my eye, the above is a modern crafts piece using a mix of new and vintage materials.

I don’t know much about jewellery but I would also think it’s a recent crafts piece. Malachite jewellery and items are popular in South African and neighbouring countries tourist and gifts market.
I got a pretty little necklace (for the wife) the other day in a charity shop for about $1.

Malachite was revered by the ancient Egyptians, mining sites of this green crystal were in use between the Sinai and Suez as early as 4,000 B.C. Malachite was also used by the upper classes in ancient Egypt as one of their main power crystals.

Based on the knots, I would say this was strung in China & this is its original form.

As stones go, malachite is soft, & it has "perfect cleavage", it easily breaks along molecular planes, so not really the best stone for jewellery, but nothing beats it for appearance. Because I can never resist inserting a cameo into a thread:

Pleased to say, yes it is. The scene is by Thorvaldsen, the Shepherdess of Cupids. My favorite cupid is the one patting the dog's nose.

Thank you. Definitely one of my favorites. It's interesting as a mineral specimen too because it's a relatively large slice of malachite that does not have any of the concentric rings; it's more speckled.

I love malachite. It was used as eyeshadow. I'm with this being original, that looks silk thread.

Mount is 18k with French marks. Simple C clasp. Pin does not extend past the frame, but appears to have been replaced.

That is really something! I've never seen a cameo done in malachite. Can see why it is one of your favorites, Bronwen.

Glad I acquired it before the price of gold went sky high & somebody broke the cameo taking it out of the mount to sell the gold for melt down.
