Featured Victorian gate purse

I didn’t even know what one was until today. It is not mine. But might be in the near future. This is the best picture I have. I have no idea if it is silver or not. I am wondering if the star looking tag is attached to the purse. I really have no idea, so any comments are appreciated.

 

Is this also known as a miser's purse?

I doubt silver...but I sure like the monkey-motion at the throat/closure!

Silver is doubtful, but I've seen these before. I'd call it a miser's purse too.

 

Probably not silver, but I have seen slightly fancier ones in silver.

Thanks everyone. When I google imaged it, there were many of these that said sterling. This one had some copper tones and dullness that made me doubtful. But, I am glad to know it is a miser’s purse. I might nab it at the right price. Thanks.

 

I'm with the others, not silver.

The price has to be veeery low.
The lid seems to have some sort of corrosion. If so, they should be paying you to take it off their hands.

 

Being a bit of a miser myself, yes very low. It will be something fun for me to check out, after i pick up my other items. I am fairly lucky in that prices are quite reasonable where I live. I bought these two purses (quite damaged) from the same people for $1.50 for the pair. I was really after a bischoff decanter($20) and a working rain lamp($25)but picked these up because, well I really don't know why. I know the decanter at $20 was a bit pricey for this area, and I have known people who found the rain lamps for $5. But overall I was happy.

 

If the top is indeed corroded, replacements are available for $3.99, though I suppose you have to be careful to find the right size.

Whit-I've got a feeling that when I toss off the phrase-'monkey-motion throat/closure' the 80 year old Librarians will perk up.
