Hi everyone. I recently purchased a Jacques Bodart Bergère chair. It is in excellent condition with original silk upholstery and down cushion. It was purchased in the early 1960's and was basically never sat on and was situated in a bedroom with a cover over it most of the time. I have found limited information about the company other than it dissolved in the late 70's, Bodart was a French designer hired by a woman from New York City to head up the company and the furniture produced was of very high quality with utmost attention to detail and fashioned after famous French pieces of furniture. I paid $325.00 for the chair and am interested in knowing more information on the value of the piece, the Jacques Bodart company and how rare this furniture is. There must be many pieces still in existence but I cannot seem to locate many examples online. I would appreciate any information you can offer. Thanks.

Thanks for your response. I did find the pair of chairs in my search. They were in terrible shape. There are a lot of poster ads for Jacques Hobart furniture available for sale online and a few pieces of casegoods but very, very few chairs.

The chair at liveauctioneers did not sell despite being brought to auction three different times. The opening bid was $250.00 so no one thought it worth that. I doubt there is much demand for these specifically since the company is pretty obscure. I would think you could compare it to other similar furniture from other makers with similar good quality.

I would think that if you want it for yourself, you didn't overpay. I don't know furniture prices, but it is very attractive. So far as selling it is concerned, I think a local sale with pick-up is your best hope for a profit. I wouldn't want to contemplate a cost for shipping.

Bodart was one of America's premier furniture manufactures. The pieces were benchmade and marketed to the upper middle class and rich. Their product was sold through high end stores and designers. Since no one is aware of Bodart today the prices are dirt cheap and a fantastic bargain. I had a dresser refinished for a client it was appraised at $15,000 for replacement of the same quality from a current manufacture.

So there is a post in furniture about these dining room chairs - they look quite similar. The person was asking for info about them.
