I have this hand colored photograph that looks like it is signed "Wentworth Parker". I have not been able to find anything with this name. I did try a few variations without any luck. The photograph has a copyright mark embossed in the lower right hand corner. What do you think it looks like? Thank you.

Yes. And I found a Wentworth Parker, age 49, in the 1940 Census, whose occupation is "artist of pictures". Born in Indiana and living at that time in Terre Haute, IN.

THANK YOU! I was questioning these old tired eyes. I'm off to see if I can find something now that I have a location.

Yes, I think that is what the signature says. Great lead, Bakers!

It has the "Wallace Nutting" look, doesn't it?

As a Parker-by-marriage, I officially agree that it does look like "Parker"! :)

There isn't a lot of information about him.

I agree, it does have that Nutting look.

Okie dokey. His full name was George Wentworth Parker Jr., born Oct 11, 1890 in Terre Haute to George Wentworth Sr. and Alice Plimpton Parker. In 1917 his WWI Draft Registration gives his occupation as "draughtsman and engineer" for the Eagle Iron Works. In the 1920 Census, he says he's a manager at the iron works. But by 1930, he says he is an artist. He died in Feb 1962 and there was an obit for him published on 21 Feb in the Terre Haute Tribune (in case you have access to it at work.) He apparently also went by Worth Parker.

There is a family tree for him on A, that has images of two "paintings" attached. One looks like a watercolor and the other something more opaque. Lovely! Not like this colored photograph at all. (Not that the photo isn't pleasant.)

Whoops! Sorry, Mill Cove. When I wrote "in case you have access to it at work" I meant to direct that part to Fig, our resident librarian.

I don't know whether I do have access or not. I can look.

... No, we do not have access to that issue.

I found this Indiana newspaper digitization project page, but looks like almost everything is from the 19th century -- Use the "Browse the Collection" link at the right. https://newspapers.library.in.gov/

That isn't relevant to this question, but I love finding sites like that!

Here are some relevant excerpts from the Feb. 1962 obit: "Wentworth Parker, local artist and nature lover...suffered a heart attack at (his Terre Haute) residence, 815 South Sixth Street...A native of Terre Haute, he was graduated from St. Johnsbury Academy at St. Johnsbury, Vt., and attended Rose Polytechnic Institute...(He) worked in oil, water color, pen and ink and in etching. He was particularly noted for his landscapes...Much of his work was of the scenes in New England states..."

From a 1969 reference to Wentworth Parker: "...Wentworth Parker was born in Terre Haute in 1890. He studied under T.C. Steele, William Forsythe and Clifton Wheeler, but in his mature paintings...he worked in an entirely independent manner..."

Thank you morgen94. I wonder if this photograph is from New England? It does have a New England look to it.

The part that doesn't look "New England-ish" to me is the split rail fence. NE usually has rock walls.

True that there are a lot of rock walls in New England (we have one), but there are plenty of split rail fences around here, too.

what does it say right beneath the image, on the left? "Early in..." something?

Sorry, I haven't had a chance to get back here.

"Early In October" is written on the left side. I lived in a rural town in NH and the farms had a lot of split rail fences as well stone walls.
