J H W england water pitcher

We have this water pitcher and bowl in my family for over 50 years and I was wondering if someone here knew anything about it.

The marks underneath says Duchess, J H W & Sons, Hanley, England.

This got me wondering, how old exactly are those? Are they rare? Are they worth something because of their age ?

The bowl is cracked and badly scratched but the pitcher is in quite pristine state.

 

Probably early 20th century but hard to be exact. Bowl worthless, nice jug but not worth a lot. Check out the site below.

Yup. They used to be wildly fashionable, but not any more. Not here, anyhow. Twenty dollars equivalent. However, it would look lovely with fat white daisies in it.

 

In the days when indoor piped water was rudimentary if at all, every bedroom in the land except the very poorest has a tile topped wash stand with jug of water and bowl for washing, often with a soap dish to match. Wealthier people who had a maid got warm water in the jug in the morning, others sometimes had to break the ice.

Since these things were made in the millions, and only breakage stops them, there are still huge numbers around, of widely variable quality and decoration.

Trouble is that they are bulky, You could accumulate a group of 40 or 50 from different makers quite cheaply but you'd need to rent a barn to display them all.

The chamber pot often lived under the wash stand. Otherwise in a bedside cabinet. Under the bed was for those who lacked either hideaway.
