Small Japanese Mask in Box

I am confused about these. I can't figure out who this is or what it may be worth. I paid $25 when it was supposed to be half-priced at $12.50 at the last day of the estate sale. I think the person leading the sale wanted it for herself. Any information would be appreciated. Thank you. It is about 3 inches high.

At 3" high, I would add the word "miniature" to the search. Might bring some additional up.

 

I think he is ceramic or paper mache. I have been researching them, prices are all over the place. I don't know what makes one more valuable than the next.

 

The value would depend on materials used,who the carver is,age,etc. much like everything else.Being small and not actually carved wood,probably a tourist item and mass produced.If there were a Japanese translator around the writing on the box might help.

Oni mask

My grandmother on my fathers side (who is Japanese) hangs one in the hallway entering the family room facing the front door. It is a superstition that these will scare away evil spirits.

Oni are not only evil. Some are protectors, known to bring good health, peace, and protection from evil spirits. One such story is of a monk that starved himself to turn into an Oni and protect his temple.
