This big 1959 44" x 35" painting has some damage and one of those illegible signatures.

I think it's done on a kind of board as the image is 'firm' to the touch, and the damage is along sorta raised spines behind the surface, as if it was improperly stored.

The back is papered with only a gallery's card affixed.

    Any ideas about the signature?

Or the country of origin or ....

I'm in the U.S. Northwest and got it at an estate sale. They had no info about it.

    Thank you!

Very nice painting, Pottery, love that blue.
India imo. A lady on her way to the well for water. Bare midriff under a saree is typically India.

Those are strong women. The weight when they walk back home for miles, one pot on their head, one in their arms. I have also seen them with two pots on top of each other, the top one being smaller.

You might have been able to ask the framers, but it appears Raven Frameworks may have gone out of business some time after 2019.

Hey thanks for looking that up @smallaxe.

And thanks for the recommend @Aquitaine. I'm thinking that maybe the name is indeed Indian to match the subject. Munta- gaz-- something something something.... ?

Anyway. The more eyes, the better the chance. So thanks for all the help!

You might Google Image 'Mid-Century Hindu Cubism. Most of the MCM Indian Art w/ Cubist tendencies, are a more realistic form of the style, not as fragmented as early 20th European Cubism which became more abstracted, more fragmented.Indian Cubism-influenced painting is still big in the sub-continent today.
You could send some pics to the larger Dealers in Mumbai,Calcutta, etc.
