Looking to find out anything about this. I am planning on purchasing it today but don't want to get ripped off. Any idea on age, or what can I look for when I go to look at it? I don't know anything about antiques, I'm JUST getting started at collecting a few items. Any help would be appreciated!

    Hi there:

Where are you? That has the most bearing on what you should pay.

Anyway, this is a hall tree ca. 1880, made of walnut. In this market in the U.S. midwest I'd expect to pay around $200 at auction.

Worth about $150 in the deep south, $400 on an island, where are you?

Besides checking over-all condition, I'd check to see if the mirror has a beveled edge. From the wee picture I'm guessing it is in nice shape.

If it has a beveled edge on the mirror what does that tell me?

komokwa The Truth is out there...!

that the 1880 circa dating is likely correct and the piece hasn't been messed with or changed over time..

Could even be 1890. Otherwise, still around $200, maybe a bit more depending on where you are in Ohio.

Toledo area. I have been looking for one for about a year and have not had much luck. I found one that was really rough for $250.00 but it sold by the time I went back. The women selling it is asking $400.00 but I did get her down to $350.00 I didn't think that was too bad only because I have not found anything around here, and they are all at LEAST $200-$250.00 But that's why I came here because I have no idea. Thanks for your input

I would buy it for my home at $400 in this great shape, so I don't feel you are overspending.

In California I'd say $400-600, but of course I live in the extorsion state :) . If you love it and its in your budget buy it.

Thank you. I'm planning on keeping it so I don't think it's a bad investment. I REALLY like it, and feel good about making the purchase. I feel like it's worth it to me, since I've been looking for a long time.

I LOVE it. For me, in rural Wisconsin, the price would be a tad high but the Toledo area would be a different market for sure. Seems to have all the appropriate hardware.

If this has the original beveled edged mirror, in good condition, I'd say you have a winner at $350. If the mirror is a replacement (plain edge) or has a lot of damage I'd see if you could get another $25 off the price.

For your own enjoyment - a good price. If you are looking to resell than I'd say the price is too high these days to make a profit.

(look folks - someone that WANTS brown furniture - comeback is on the way) :D
