I have bunches. The one I'm thinking of, though, is by Sybile Jargstorf (who also did Baubles, Buttons, and Beads: The Heritage of Bohemia).

EDIT: Glass Beads from Europe ... nope, didn't find it, googled it. :hilarious:

I have it - can take quick look in a few minutes.

I have a couple of these in my orphan beads (most packed away at the moment), but no idea where I acquired them...

We're looking at Hurricane Dorian hitting our area Sunday/Monday, so I'm a bit busy - took a very quick look through Jargstorf's 'Glass Beads from Europe', without luck, but did find similar faceted beads in different colorways and shapes than yours on pages 50 and 150 in her 'Glass in Jewelry' book, described as bi-colored' and 1920s.

Seems unlikely, but I just wish Dorian would head back out to sea - stay safe in the meantime.

As to the beads, I think 1920s works for the spacers being electroplated, too.

Where are you in Florida? If you're in the path, take care too. Glad it didn't slam into Puerto Rico, but so far, still looks like it's heading straight at us - of course they do turn, which would be really, really nice...

Can't really tell from the pics, but to my eye, the spacers look more like faceted hematite finish glass to me.

I'm northwest of Tallahassee. We still have infrastructure issues from Michael and would rather there not be more hurricanes for now, thank you very much.

    Where are you?

Doesn't look it will be too bad for you, unless it decides blow all the way across the state and up the gulf coast, which is entirely possible given how they can change direction, and looks like it might develop into a Cat. 4. Most projected paths still showing it heading right for Central Florida - I'm in Winter Park (Orlando area), at least we're inland. Maybe we'll luck out and it will veer North...

Yes; hand-faceted. Doesn't mean that literally; in Bohemia (pre-Czech government), glass bead laborers sat on a hard stool in front of a polishing wheel that turned perpendicularly toward their bodies. Initially, these were peddle driven. In front of the wheel as it spun toward his body, a man would tilt forward, grab the handles of a device stabilized to the floor, and push a cylinder of bead blanks forward. He'd polish one face, then shake the cylinder, polish the next, and so forth. My guess is these are Bohemian crystal, circa 1890, made for 'fine European ladies,' i.e., Victorians with money.

Wow! Thank you all! I hope Dorian blows out to sea.....stay safe and keep us posted.

And I just ordered the Glass Beads from Europe book from Amazon. I think a drone was running into my porch last night, got a delivery around 8 pm from Amazon Prime.

that, that right there, that is the thing that has us checking fuel and water supplies. :shifty:

I spent most of my life in the Tampa Bay area (Brandon, Seffner, Dunedin, St. Pete, Tampa, and Clearwater -- always near enough to Orlando to function as a hotel for long lost family and friends), so I at least know of Winter Park. :joyful:

North enough and east enough that nobody needs their supplies.

I am not a Florida fan, East coast, (too hot, humid, gatory, buggy, and touristy for me), but I have a friend in Tampa and I loved that area.

I love Florida, but I could certainly do with fewer bugs.

Been here close to 50 years, lots of changes, but still love it (ditto on the bugs). We used to party over in Tampa and Clearwater in the '70s-'80s, but by the '90s, Orlando had a pretty well-developed night-life, though it's a bit quieter now (and so am I)...

Seems they think it would weaken and blow out in the water if it moves North, but doesn't look like that will happen.

They certainly can be unpredictable, 15 years ago, when Orlando got hit with three hurricanes in 6 weeks, the first one, Charley, was headed for Tampa, tons of people from that area evacuated here, we didn't really have time to prepare when it shifted and blew our way - evacuees trapped here, no hotel rooms, not enough room in shelters, just a huge cluster-****. By the third storm, we pretty much knew how to deal with it.

I had a Tampa friend who got stranded in Orlando during Charley!

I lived in Clearwater, then. Less than a mile inland, but not an evacuation zone (we jokingly referred to living on top of Mount St. Clearwater -- for those not aware, hurricane evacuation zones are based on flood potential, not wind).

I remember sitting in my closet (okay, it was a walk-in, but still a closet) listening to the radio and when they said the words, "just took a little jog"... well I've never been happier about "a little jog."

My aunt, who lived in Wauchula? Lost her roof and the house ended up condemned. Yeah, she had stayed, because it was Wauchula for sweet sake. Who evacuates Wauchula for a hurricane?

phew, last one of that season took our electric for two weeks, but that was the worst of it.

Heh, knew we were in trouble with Charley as we sat on the back porch watching waves of water blow out of the pool as transformers blew up all around us, lost power for a week, only three days with Frances, and five days for Jeanne - at least Ivan didn't hit us. Sort of got used to being covered with a layer of sweat, the no-choice cold showers helped, and the smell and sound of generators became the norm - my back neighbor used his gigantic commercial welder for power, we'd get a break from the incredible noise when it ran out of gas, only to have his incredibly awful wife (now an ex), start screaming that the air conditioner (we were lucky to power a fan) was off in the house and he'd better get it started back up. Ughhh, he's no gem, but nobody deserved that witch...

Two weeks without electric was awful in Clearwater.

But we had water there. Here? We're on a well.

Michael taught us the luxury of running water. And how much stink everyone can tolerate when everyone stinks.

    Quite a bit actually. :hilarious:
