Years ago (haven't looked, may still be available) you could buy what was called a "finger cot", which was a tubular rubber item, almost exactly the same as a condom, to protect cuts, etc. while submerging your hands in water. We kept a box of them on the shelf over the sink in the butlery for the man to use when he washed up after meals. My brother & I used to sneak one out on occasion and plant them in friends book bags or in notes such as invitations, etc. We thought it was a riot - my parents? Not so much, though I caught my mother smiling more than once when we were reported by classmates parents..............................
