Happy to meet all of you. Today, I purchased an old dresser from a moving sale. Well, it looks old to me. I was hoping for some help with approximate age and what the style of furniture might be called. The piece just fascinates me and I’d like to know more about it.

The purchase location is in Oregon, USA.

It has large numbers written on the back: 433, 6, and 18. There are some numbers written on the inside- 23 on the inside of one of the drawers, and something like 31 X 16/25 on the wood platform of the drawer track. Not sure if that means anything or if it’s just graffiti of sorts.

I have included photos of the joinery, the assembly hardware (corrugated fasteners I think, and the nails vary in consistency of roundness so possibly not machined?), and the pulls. The ring pulls have a VERY small number 87 embossed on the back side of the ring itself.

There are no other marks that I have found.

I hope these are some clues! Thank you to anyone who chimes in and helps me on my search for answers. :)

(Pardon the mess- we are moving soon- there are boxes EVERYWHERE!)

Those two pieces appear to be a marriage. Are you sure they started life together?

It came the way it is. 1920's is good. And I just love the fact that you are in the process of moving, and yet you are buying furniture that speaks to you!

Also, I happen to love "brown furniture." My knowledge of Oregon is next to nil, but I do recall my Eastern college having troodles of similar furniture for the dorm rooms. They were sturdy and handsome and, while not meant for the drawing rooms of the Vanderbilts, they added a bit of panache. There were several pieces I wanted to take home with me, to shine them up/paint them, make them look elegant again.

1920s is about right. Style is a mish-mash of traditional design. Sometimes called traditional revival or depression-era furniture. Popular from just after WWI, though the 30s. Wood is figured walnut book-matched veneers on the front. The oak secondary wood on your piece indicates that this is likely English in origin.

Beautiful, well built piece & harmonious till the base w/ the 'festoon' & 2 front legs.We go frm a restrained perhaps early 19th century vibe right into the 1920's.Still a very nice piece.

Yes I love elegant, simple brown furniture too! I plan to work on this piece a bit to try and make her sparkle once again.

It definitely turns into a party at the bottom! I was surprised too. But I just love how quirky it is. And boy is it HEAVY! They don’t make ‘em like they used to. I can’t believe the little wheels are holding it up as well as they are. Thank you for your reply.

Wow! What a great dresser. Old furniture is so much more practical for actually putting clothes away than new stuff. I couldn't even guess how many pairs of jeans / / sweatshirts / piles of Ts you can get in those 2 bottom drawers. And isn't that all that we wear now? The newer dressers are only good for holding up your bedroom TV.
