I bought this from a Charity shop because it looked well made and only found the makers logo when I got home and peeled off the price sticker. Anyway I thought that would make it easy to find the maker but no luck so far. I think it’s mainly wood, some pressed for decoration but it could be papier mache. 3inches diameter, 1 and a half inches deep. The lid fits really well. Any thoughts about when/where made and what sort of wood please? Thanks

Perhaps finding the unusual "fingers used would tell you what Country.

Agree with Kyra that the item is probably Russian make. Not only the material but the scene on the lid is a typical Russian Siberian scene with a wooden hut and fir trees around. There are examples in Etsy of similar boxes, 3 inches in diameter but with different scenes, described as jewelry boxes.

I think the makers mark on the bottom is upside down on the photo. When turned, the inscription looks in the old Cyrillic style, most probably reads "ШВ" (which would be "SHV" where SH is one letter), no idea of the maker, there are many Russian names with this initials, family name comes first in the Russian habit, could be Shalamov Vitaly or Shukshin Vassilly, or Shishkin Vladimir, or some other.

Is that really birchbark though or simulated?

I found similar example also in Meshook (the Russian equivalent of ebay or etsy)

It is Russian, found the same makers mark (last photo) on an item in Meshok, the listing says "made of birchbark" and "used to keep powder", no details of the mark.
Шкатулка для украшений из бересты = высокохудожественная резьба = клеймо = хранили пудру. Мешок (meshok.net)

On this photo in Meshok it looks like it is not "ШВ" but "ИIВ", in the old Cyrillic there were two "I"s, now in modern Cyrillic, in Ukrainian they kept those two "I"s and use both, in BG and Russian there is only one "I" - "И". So it looks like the initials of the full maker's name with three letters - eg. Ilya Ivanovich Vassilyev. And that the old Cyrillic style is used.

Now I read that the language reform when "I" was excluded from Russian alphabet, was done in 1918. So the letters on this mark use Russian Cyrillic from Tsarist times. Cannot say if it is originally from this time or a modern repro.

I have the country, the wood. Brilliant! Thank you to all:)
I did look for Russian boxes but nothing similar came up without birch being typed in.

Thank you IvaPan, I did wonder if I had it the correct way up.

My pleasure, Houseful! Glad to help when I can, there is not much I can contribute here as most of the members are way more experienced and knowledgeable than me. But Russian is among my few capabilities :)
B.t.w in the Russian site it is also upside down :) The seller however does not pay any attention to the mark except for mentioning that there is a mark, there is no effort to show provenance, I guess because the price is not high.

Edit, on the second photo it is shown in the right way (where holding in hands), only on the last one it is upside down.

I’m pretty much the same with my small contributions IvaPan, we all learn here though and Antiquers is an enjoyable way to do that.
