Hoping this is a near antique. I'm sure it's 20th century, could it possibly be as old as 1920's? 3" across. What can you tell me?

Your picture of the mark is upside down. You may be able to find a match in this link to Gotheborg. The circle with the crossed lines inside is the mon (family crest) of the Shimazu family.

The symbols on the bottom look like Chinese markings, not Japanese, but the scene looks Japanese. I’m just not sure what’s going on with this. I’ve researched the symbols but I cannot find them. I’ll have to look up the family someone posted here.

Definitely Japanese Satsuma - guess would be Meiji era - I skimmed Gotheborg for the mark and didn't see it right away but I may have missed it.

Actually this was my first thought, too. Top scene, definitely Japanese, but the stamp looks a bit Chinese, but I don't speak Chinese so wasn't sure. Thank you for searching the symbols @JenQ

Thank you for checking/scanning Gotheborg, @aaroncab . I did a google image search with no results. I often associate those red stickers with a slightly older piece, so took those stickers as a good sign. I did see a few other boxes on Ebay, not this exact one but similar in many ways, including scenes inside, and one auction of a sold piece said Meiji Era.

I was very happy to find this as it seems to have some nice quality. I'm wondering what the scene is exactly? Are they all looking at the butterflies? The boy seems to have thrown (or is catching?) a worm maybe or caterpillar or also a butterfly, can't quite make it out.

It's a good quality piece. I'd have it in a heartbeat. Meiji era, I think, like aaroncab!
