Featured Just a old piece of wood

Hi,I was just wondering about this piece of wood (hopefully without sounding too stupid) Paid a few cents for it because it intrigued me. Looks like someone tried to make it into something? Maybe a lamp? Looks really old to me and shiny in parts (maybe coated with clear coat or varnish?) Thinking it must be grapevine? Weights just under 2kg. The bulbous part is 17cm wide. Any other thoughts? Many thanks

 

It's a clever piece no doubt, it can make a shadow hand puppet of a wolf !

It maybe a burl . Here are two of mine. Yes , I know they look obscene.

 

It does look like a burl. Are there holes drilled in it?

 

Def a cool piece of wood-i thought burl too.You can do a lot w/ a burl.
Go fancy or go Shinto natural.

 

Is it petrified? It looks a bit like rock

Thanks. Was also wondering,also looked petrified to me a first. But I think it has been coated with something and gives it that appearance.

 

A few strokes with a tenon saw would be conclusive
