Featured Antique Basket

Recently picked up this basket at an estate auction and thought that I would show it off. There is a note on it stating it was Grandma Hopkin's egg basket and that it is over 100 years old. Do you folks agree with the assessment that it is an egg basket and is pre-1920? Any additional information would be welcomed.

 

It is a nice basket, in quite good condition from what we can see in the photos (with some damaged/missing elements in the base).

Yes, you could collect eggs in it. You could also put all kinds of other stuff in it. Such baskets were multi-purpose, so the note is the best evidence of what this one was once used for, and you are lucky to have it.

It is a style of splint basket that has been made for hundreds of years, so the accompanying provenance is the best evidence of its age. The patina would support such a date. It is not a recently made basket.

Yes, not an egg basket per se , but a gathering or market basket...
the way the hard wood handle is secured to the split wood rim with that thick notch let's the basket hold more weight than one would think..

so, I'll call this a late 1900's ash splint basket, New England. ( but possibly NY..) .... wear and patina consistent with loving use.....
