These antique vases were my MIL's, been in my attic for at least 20 years. Anyhoo, what is the animal on the handles? I thought either a dog or an ox, but not sure. Also, is there any significance or name to the pattern on the body?
    Thanks so much,
    Janice

I think a makara, a protective mythical animal in Hinduism and Buddhism.

The pattern is Archaic or Archaistic style. The top cloisonné band is a stylised Taotie mask.

I ain't handling no buffalo! Not by the tail end especially. I thought elephants at first, but close up... probably not.
