Pickings have been very slim, and I've been focusing on overseeing the finish of a garage project that due to COVID supply delays took 2 1/2 years to construct. I got a few things, but they will go into the Finds thread, as they are obvious. This small covered dish caught my eye because it was unusual, at least to me. It is smallish and squat and doesn't have a handle to lift. It must have an obvious purpose, but I don't know what it is.

The lid is faceted, but the bottom has a Greek key design. I don't know if they go together. The lid fits well though. The bottom has the H mark but not the diamond. It looks like the mark melted a bit, but this is just my guess.

It is 4 5/8" in diameter and 2 1/2 inches tall.

    Any thoughts will be appreciated.

My guess would be it's part of a dresser set. Possibly a powder jar or a puff box. I bet it would be great for holding cotton balls or make-up remover pads.

That makes sense. That's why it doesn't have a handle because it's not for food. DUH.

I have the colonial version of the puff box and hair receiver. They sit on my dresser and hold the jewelry that I wear most often so I don't have to root around in the jewelry box so much. This one is very nice!

I almost spit out my morning coffee! $175 at Auction????????? I spent $8.

Thanks for the follow up on the on specifics. It's clearly the right lid. I was worried it was a marriage.

Yes that is my exact piece. Thank you. I'm not getting hair receiver though because it doesn't have a hole, so the hair would spring out, but what do I know of ladies' fashion accessories in the Victorian period.

Ah. I looked up your piece. Great idea on jewelry storage. I too like to find uses for my old glass rather than just sitting around pretty in a display case.

I've never understood the idea of a "hair receiver". I asked my Gramma once, when she was still alive (she had one). She said it was for hair out of your brush and then ladies would make/stuff pin cushions with the hair. That seemed silly to me, but WDIK? My Gramma used hers as a pin box and liked that she could just drop little things in it without taking off the lid.

I understand that one of the purposes was to make hair buns to add to give bulk to your hair for elaborate hairdos. Your Gramma was very clever to find a use for hers.
