    Hi.

The 4th picture i posted is whats on the back of the tile.its a black material stuck on to the back of tile with a metal fitting for hanging

I think this may be stuck to back with a type of glue

Very cool art tile, looks to be about from the sixties or seventies from the back, maybe a little earlier even. Sizeable, and with interesting subject matter, appealing colors. I don't know who did it, but I like it very much.

    Hi there,
Yea it caught my eye too.i love it when other people appreciate and like what i find attractive.my wife is sick of me bringing stuff into the house but i keep doing it.i might ask to hang it instead of it being in attic with most of my other finds

That reminds me of Japanese tiles from the 60s-70s.

You may be correct about this too, Johnny. I definitely do get an Asian vibe from it, but thought it could be Vietnamese. The size matches up with some of the other tiles I've seen from there. I have no idea the origin, however Vietnam was my WAG!

After looking more at it, I doubt it to be Vietnamese and more likely Johnny is closer with Japanese. To my eye, it resembles student work more than souvenir work. An ordinary amount of artist's time went into making this, it's nothing extraordinary, if that's what your question is, Martin. It has the flare that an artist made it, rather than a hobbyist (to my eye). And it may have been made as a souvenir of the country it came from, by looking at the hanging mounting on the back.

Well, I would call it an intaglio design cut into the face of a flat, unfired clay tile. (There are other terms for this sort of carving too.) Just a flat piece of tile that has dried enough to cut into it with small tools. Then, it's fired in a kiln, becomes hardened bisque clay and is painted with glazes and fired again. Hope this helps you, Martin.

Well, that is intriguing. Could be artist, or talented amateur/student, but I'm leaning toward artist as there is quite a bit of technique involved. The raised lines are made by coloured slip being applied. It's sort of like Moorcroft tube lining.
